Dr. Abdisalam Abdirahman Mohamed is the Director General of the Somalia National Bureau of Statistics (SNBS), where he leads the national statistical system and champions data-driven decision-making in support of Somalia’s National Transformation Plan (NTP) and Vision 2060. In this role, he oversees large-scale nationally representative surveys and administrative data systems, strengthens economic, social, and production statistics, modernizes statistical infrastructure, and drives the analysis, dissemination, and accessibility of official statistics to inform policy, planning, and development.
Prior to his appointment at SNBS, Dr. Mohamed served as a member of the Somalia National Economic Council, appointed by the President, and held senior technical roles as Senior Economist at the Ministry of Finance and as an Economic Development Expert at the Ministry of Planning, Investment, and Economic Development. Internationally, he has worked as an Energy Economist in Norway with Multiconsult and as a Research Associate at the London School of Economics’ Conflict Research Programme, gaining extensive applied, cross-country, and policy-relevant experience.
Dr. Mohamed holds a PhD in Economics from the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow. His research expertise lies in advanced econometric and quasi-experimental methods—including Difference-in-Differences, Propensity Score Matching, Instrumental Variables, Regression Discontinuity, event-study approaches, and staggered adoption designs—to rigorously evaluate policies and interventions in fragile and conflict-affected settings. His research portfolio spans remittances and household welfare, conflict-related shocks, health and energy economics, and labor market dynamics, emphasizing the use of high-frequency, administrative, and survey data.
He is highly proficient in STATA, R, and LaTeX, with advanced skills in econometric modelling, data analysis, and research design, alongside extensive experience with Excel and SPSS. Operating at the intersection of research and policy, Dr. Mohamed transforms complex datasets into credible, actionable evidence that informs national policy, strengthens institutions, and supports sustainable development. In this capacity, he leads and coordinates strategic partnerships with key international partners, including the World Bank, African Development Bank, United Nations agencies, and the Swiss Development Cooperation.
